Using mass transportation systems is an ideal way for you to do your part by helping to save the environment. Mass transportation reduces the number of vehicles on the road, thereby reducing the consumption of fossil fuels. Transportation is considered to be responsible for 60 to 90% of urban air pollution. Using greener forms of mass transportation will help in reducing air pollution and climate change emissions. Various countries are promoting the use of mass transportation facilities due to this. Iceland for example is promoting the use of Hydrogen run buses. This comes after the country made significant strides in harnessing hydroelectric and geothermal energy.
In New York, school buses have been refitted to ensure that they are eco friendly in nature. The buses have been retrofitted with diesel oxidation catalysts and crankcase spiracle filters which help to reduce that air pollution that is emitted by these buses. This was part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) drive for a more eco friendly school buses. New York also has hybrid electric buses.
One of the most successful countries in introducing environmentally friendly public transportation has been Denmark. The system of sustainable transportation developed helps in maximizing efficiency and contributes to the social well being of the general public by providing them with greater mobility with transport that has a significantly smaller environment impact. One of the main modes of transportation in Denmark is cycles. The uses of cycles have been promoted to the extent that even some public buses have provision for people to take cycles with them by bus.
Another country that has strived to invent environment friendly modes of transportation is Japan. This is a country in which a majority of the population uses public transportation. In Tokyo 70% of the people depend on modes of public transport. In order to ensure that transportation remains eco – friendly the Japanese government like many other countries, have established strict legislation that helps promotes environmentally friendly vehicles. Japan is said to have one of the most stringent fuel quality standards in the world. The amount of Benzene permissible in the fuel here should be under 1% and Sulfur in diesel under 0.05%.
There is a constant effort on to ensure that eco friendly vehicles are used for public transportation. For every bus that is used almost sixty cars will not be used on the roads. While for every train that is utilized over two hundred cars will not be used. Buses are considered to be more eco friendly than cars as they emit 80% less carbon monoxide. The use of public transportation in the city of New York alone can cut fuel consumption by 1.33 billion gallons every year according to the Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA)
