What are bottom-mount refrigerators and why use them:
Bottom-mount refrigerators provide a freezer compartment at the bottom of the fridge. These models of fridges are not easily available though they have been growing popular over the last five years. The benefit of these fridges is that the main fresh food compartment is at eye level. This makes access to the fresh food much easier, eliminating the constant need to bend over to rummage in the crisper.
The size of a bottom-mount refrigerator:
In terms of size and dimensions, these fridges are similar to that of a top-mounted model. They have an average width of 33 inches and a depth of 32 to 35 inches. The height of these fridges ranges between 66 and 69 inches.
The advantage of a bottom-mount refrigerator:
In these models, the freezer resembles a large drawer that one pulls out to open. This model is ideal for people who rarely open their freezers. This way, bending over for foot items can be avoided. An additional advantage is that small children find it more difficult to open a bottom-mounted refrigerator as compared to a top-mounted model.
The disadvantage of a bottom-mount refrigerator:
The disadvantage of a bottom-mounted unit is that the compressor vents exhaust from the bottom of the unit. This leads to the compressor burning out faster than in a top-mounted model. Since warm air escapes from the bottom of these models, it is more likely that these fridges will keep your kitchen warmer. Due to the design of bottom-mounted refrigerators, there is usually less cubic space of storage available as compared to a top-mounted model.
Energy efficiency in a bottom-mount refrigerator:
Energy star-compliant fridges are energy efficient when it comes to electricity consumption. Look for an average star rating between 3 and 4.5. A smaller bar fridge can be rated at 2 to 2.5. Although energy-saving fridges may cost more, the savings incurred over the lifespan of the fridge make up the difference.
