Using energy efficient appliances is one way to cut down on the electricity bills and save money. It is practical to buy appliances which are energy efficient as they last longer and cost lesser to run. It is preferable to buy appliances that have the Energy Star label as they are energy efficient.
Here are a few tips we can keep in mind when we go appliance shopping:
- Refrigerators: Refrigerators are more efficient when the freezers are on the top rather than on the side. Go in for a smaller freezer which is less than 25 cubic feet as they use lesser energy as compared to larger models. Ensure that the refrigerator has well-fitted door hinges that do not allow air in.
- Computers: A laptop consumes lesser energy as compared to a desktop. Turn off monitors when the computer is not in use.
- Clothes Dryer: Some dryers have moisture sensors that automatically shut down your machine once the clothes are dry. Select a washing machine with spin options as spinning clothes on a high or extended speed greatly reduces moisture thus ensuring that clothes dry faster.
- Washing machines: Select a machine that uses less water, has the capacity to wash large loads and has spin-cycle options. Front-load machines utilize less amount of water and have shorter cycles as compared to the conventional top-load machines.
- Stoves and Ovens: Opt for stoves that use natural gas as they emit very little carbon and nitrogen. Buy a stove with different burner sizes to use with large and small pots and pans. Invest in a microwave as it improves energy efficiency in the kitchen. Use auto controls that turn off the microwave when the food is ready or a combination microwave that uses cooking technologies such as halogen lights and convection. Use smaller cooking appliances as they use less energy and are less expensive to run. Pressure cookers save time and preserve the nutrition in food.
- Irons: A steam iron does not consume too much power while ironing.
