Ideal temperatures:
The temperature settings of the retail outlet’s HVAC system, needs to be in sync with the general weather conditions outside the shop. The temperature settings of a HVAC system is usually regulated depending on the temperature of the shop. The ideal temperature that the shop should be maintained at during summer is 80°F with a relative humidity of 55%. In winter, the recommended temperature is 65°F. In order to ensure that the temperature control of the retail outlet is optimized programmable thermostats need to be used. Timers can be used to initiate start and stop cycles to automatically regulate the temperature within the shop.
When operating a HVAC system in a retail outlet, care should be taken to ensure that cold air and warm air is not intermixed within the retail environment. It is advisable to keep the temperature controls locked so that there are no unauthorized changes in the temperature setting.
Using fans:
In order to save on energy, ceiling and pedestal fans should be used whenever possible. This will help in cut down on the expenditure on the cooling of the building. Doors should be kept closed in order to preserve the room temperature, especially doors leading outside the premises. Exhaust ventilation should be utilized only when required.
Maintaining your HVAC System:
In order to ensure that your HVAC system is operating at maximum efficiency it is necessary to ensure that the system is regularly maintained. This entails ensuring that the furnace filters are replaced on a bi-monthly schedule. The registers of the HVAC system should have access to free airflow. Ductwork that is located in unconditioned areas should be well insulated. There should be no ductwork leaks.
Checks should be undertaken to ensure that there are no unusual noises, or vibrations from the HVAC’s air conditioners. The performance of the compressors and motors should be observed in order to detect any decrease in output and efficiency.
If there is use of any kind of fossil fuel on the premises, monthly checks on the carbon monoxide sensors should be undertaken.
The condensate drain pans of the HVAC should be cleaned on a regular basis. The condenser coils also requires maintenance.
Controlling the ambient temperatures:
Retail outlets have many people walking through the shop. It is crucial to preserve the ambient temperature of the shop at a level that is favorable. In order to do that the building’s insulation should be capable of keeping unwanted external air mixing with the interior environment. This is done by checking the insulation of the outlet. Outside air leaks should be plugged by using low expanding foam. Cracked windows should be fixed promptly to prevent any escape of cool air or vice versa. Windows should be equipped with blinds or films to cut down the radiant heat effect of the sun.
