What is synthetic grass?
Synthetic grass or artificial turfis made from man-made materials and acts as a substitute for natural
grass. The basic element, a polymer like nylon, polypropylene or
polyethylene is melted at a high temperature and mixed with pigments.
After adding UV stabilizers it is shaped into grass like ribbons. Next,
they are tufted and attached into a fabric using adhesives along with
foam padding. Sand or rubber granules are used as infilling to keep the
ribbons upright, resembling natural grass.
Where can synthetic grass be used?
Synthetic grass is used in the following places:
- Lawns
- Roof gardens
- Turf for sports such as tennis, football, rugby
- Golf course
- Public spaces
- Parks and Playgrounds
What are the benefits of synthetic grass?
Environment friendly: The polyethylene fibers used to make synthetic
grass can easily be recycled. Also, the carbon emission by lawn movers
is cut down.
Low maintenance: The grass does not need to be taken care off at all.
Mowing the grass, using pesticides and other chemicals may not be
possible for the elderly but they can still enjoy a patch of green lawn
with synthetic grass. .
Water conservation: Since the grass is artificial it does not need any
water. When it is used in larger spaces such as playgrounds, playing
fields, and golf courses it saves a tremendous amount of water.
Reduction in water pollution: Natural grass need to be sprayed with
pesticides quite often. When the grass is watered, it results in water
contamination as a result of the pesticide run off into storm water
drains. This could possibly seep into other water resources available
nearby. Synthetic grass does not need any pesticide use and hence
prevents possible water pollution.
UV resistant: The grass uses raw materials which help it to resist the
ultra-violet rays of the sun and remains green all through the year.
Low cost: Though the initial cost of laying a lawn with synthetic grass
can be high compared to natural grass, as a direct result of low
maintenance the costs involved over a longer period of time reduce
tremendously. A lot of money is saved due to the minimum maintenance
needed. Also, no additional equipment needs to be bought for its
maintenance.
Long lifespan: Synthetic grass has a long lifespan as a direct result of the durable materials that are used for its production.
