Helping to preserve the environment when shopping is something that everyone can attempt. Here are a few steps that are applicable to conserve energy while shopping.
Use Your Own Bags:
The first step in saving energy is to bring your own bags. This means that you reduce the amount of plastic consumed.
Plastic bags are made of petroleum products which are an important and rare fossil fuel. Cloth bags are a good option, especially when you are grocery shopping. These bags are durable and reusable.
If you do have to take a bag, ask for a paper bag instead of a plastic one. Paper is easier to recycle than plastic and therefore an eco friendly option.
Shop in Bulk:
Whenever possible buy in bulk. A
larger package will always consume lesser raw materials than a number
of small packets or satchels of the same product. At the same time,
there are savings incurred for the end user. Families should always opt
for large size packages as they are more economical . One example of
this is buying a large box of cereal that will last for a week instead
of buying numerous small boxes that can be used on a daily basis. Buying
reusable containers or refills is another way to save on packaging
costs.
Invest in Long Lasting Products:
Look
for products that have a high reusable value and a long life. Products
such as recyclable batteries can be used over and over again and have a
long shelf life. Other examples include using cloth diapers instead of
disposable ones. Similarly, switching to cloth towels instead of paper
napkins helps in saving the amount paper that is being used. The savings
incurred on each child is up to $500. Switch from disposable razors to
razors with replaceable blades or even better, an electric one!
Buy
Local:
Try buying directly from local farms and
wholesalers. You can be assured that their products are fresh and are
available at rates cheaper than what may be offered at a supermarket.
You may also find that certain products that do not grace the shelves of
supermarkets are available here. When you go shopping, try to do it along with other friends. This
will ensure that you save on money by pooling resources such as fuel.
Look
for Recyclable or Recycled Products:
Opt for
environment friendly products that are made of recyclable materials.
Look for eco friendly tags on products. Donate your old clothes at
thrift shops. These establishments are a form of recycling existing
products until they can no longer be used in any form.
Reduce
Impulse Purchases:
If you happen to eat out while you
are shopping, make sure to drop recycle items such as Styrofoam cups and
plastic plates and trays in recycling bins. As far as possible do not
shop on an empty stomach, this will prevent a number of impulse
purchases. Items that are bought in such scenarios are often discarded
as they do not have any practical use later on.
