It is essential that we have functional rooms in our homes that help us save energy and reduce our utility bills. As responsible citizens, we also need to ensure that we reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and that we do not contribute towards environmental pollution. There are some simple ways by which we can prevent this from happening and we can begin with our living rooms.
Some tips for the living room:
- Whenever your living room is not in use, ensure that the heating and the lights are turned off.
- Electrical appliances in your living room such as televisions and music systems should be turned off as they continue to consume energy while they are on stand-by.
- Carpets and rugs installed in the living room not only add to the overall charm of the room but also help insulate the place.
- It is better to invest in a small screen television as it uses fewer watts as compared to a large screen television.
- Select the right-sized heater for the room as energy gets wasted with overheating. Using an undersized heater would be more expensive in the long run.
- Replace light bulbs in your living room with energy efficient fluorescent lamps. They not only consume less electricity but also last longer.
- Keep the windows in your living room open during summer to cut down on cooling bills. Using ceiling fans with air conditioning can cut cooling costs.
- In winter, ensure that windows are well sealed to prevent warm air from escaping. Caulk and weather strip around doorframes and windows to prevent leakage of air.
- If you have a fireplace in your living room make sure the flue damper is tightly closed when not in use. This will prevent warm air or air-conditioned air from escaping.
- Fix heat – resistant reflectors on the walls behind radiators to deflect the heat back into the room in winter.
- Ensure that floor vents are not blocked by furniture so that hot or cool air can circulate freely in the room.
- If there are any battery chargers or power adapters in your living room they should be unplugged when not in use.
- Use pastel shades to paint the walls in your living room as they aid in the reflection of light.
- In winter, open drapes and blinds to allow sunlight to penetrate and warm the room.
