The system can use this cold stored in the system to eliminate the need for using the air conditioning systems compressor during peak periods of the day when it is very expensive to do so.

How thermal storage systems work:

Thermal energy systems use a medium that changes state to store the cold. The most commonly used system makes use of water as a medium, which changes into ice. This system is commonly used in smaller thermal storage systems. Another type of thermal energy storage system uses a change in the temperature of a material without a change in its state. Water again is a good example of material used for this.

Thermal energy storage systems help in reducing the initial cost of cooling by providing distribution temperatures that are lower than traditional cooling systems. This means that the size of piping can be reduced and less equipment is required for distributing the cool air. The operating cost of operating such a system is reduced as smaller compressor and pumps are used and there is an overall reduction of consumption at peak hours.
