What are insulated curtains?
Insulated curtains are lined curtains which inhibit the heat, light and sound from entering or leaving your home through windows and doors. They help in keeping the temperature indoors constant without depending on the thermostat to regulate the temperature. This means a great deal of savings in terms of heating and cooling costs.
How do insulated curtains work?
Insulated curtains are made up of several layers of various materials to regulate the energy exchange.
Usually they are made of four layers in the order described below:
-
A decorative outer layer visible from the outside which is protected by an inner lining.
-
A high-density foam fill that blocks energy exchange and acts as a sound barrier.
-
A reflective vapor barrier to block moisture.
-
A reflective film that reflects heat back into the room or out of it depending on the season.
Some insulated curtains come with an extra magnetic strip sewn into hems of the curtains which add more protection by tightly holding to the window frames or surrounding wall unlike free hanging curtains.
Benefits of Insulated curtains
-
By regulating the heat and light, they reduce the energy bills drastically.
-
They serve as excellent sound barriers.
-
They leave a cozy glow in the room by shutting out excess light.
-
They cost a great deal less than electro chrome or gas filled windows.
Tips and Maintenance
-
During winters, if you draw the curtains apart to let in the sunlight and close them at night, they keep the heat trapped inside the room and keep it warm.
-
All those layers do not take away their attractiveness a bit. They can look extremely chic with their splendid prints and patterns and gorgeous colors to suit the décor of your homes and they are available in all standard sizes.
-
Besides, being 55% cotton and 45% polyester, they are easy to maintain although they may require a little bit more attention than the normal curtains. Mildew tends to form with the moisture that collects behind them if they are not opened often enough. Frequently opening these curtains and a light vacuuming after using an upholstery spray is sufficient.
