What is Green Computing?
Green computing involves the responsible use of computers and related resources to reduce energy consumption and be environmentally aware. Today, computers help make the world a better place by providing information at our finger-tips and allowing instant communication. There are a number of designs and models available in the market but today computers are one of the most resource-heavy and disposed items available. This has a negative impact on the environment as outdated computers that are disposed off end up either in landfills or are pulled apart for their metal content, in the bargain polluting the environment. Green computing ensures that computer resources are efficiently used by controlling power consumption as well as manufacturing computers that are recyclable and use fewer hazardous materials.
How to contribute to Green Computing?
- One way to support green computing is by using CPU’s, servers, and peripherals that consume less energy.
- We could also ensure that the CPU and energy intensive peripherals are powered-down when not in use for a long time.
- The computer should be turned off at night ensuring that energy utilization is reduced.
- On weekends, when we are away from the desk, we should ensure that the computer is not left running.
- Another way to go green is by using dark backgrounds for the screen display as they consume less power.
- Invest in an ink-jet printer as they use 80 to 90 percent less energy as compared to laser printers.
- Donating old computers to the less fortunate such as learners from low-income families and to non-profit organizations ensures that outdated but usable products are reused and kept out of the waste management system.
- If your computer cannot be reused, ensure that it is recycled in an effective manner with computer parts recycled separately allowing reuse or resale of working parts.
