Energy saving in Bathrooms

Some tips that would help us to save energy in the bathroom are as follows:

• Take a shower instead of a bath as a 10-minute shower would use less water compared to a soak in the bathtub.
• Faucets with aerators and a shower-head that has a flow-restrictor would reduce the gallons of water being used. In winter, when hot showers are the norm, this helps save on the power used for heating water, thus reducing electricity bills.
• Any holes or cracks in the bathroom’s ductwork and plumbing should be sealed to prevent mold and moisture issues.
• Any leakages in the bathroom faucets should be attended to immediately as it would prevent wastage of water. A hot water leakage at the rate of just one drop per second would result in both water and electricity wastage.
• High humidity in your bathroom can reduce the life of the light fixtures in your bathroom. To prevent this from happening run your ventilating fan while having a shower and for 15 minutes after that.
• Shave and brush your teeth with the faucet turned off when you do not need the water. This would help you save water.
• Invest in a hot water system that uses less electricity and requires little or no maintenance. This could be an initial expense but is cost-effective in the long run. A solar water heater will pay for itself in a couple of years.
• Small volume toilets with water-saver flush kits can reduce the amount of water wasted. Conversion kits are available to transform existing toilet flush tanks into water savers. Dual flush options allow the user to choose the amount of water used to flush.
• In winter leaving the hot water in the tub to cool would add some humidity to the air and warm the bathroom.
