Here are some tips that you can use:

• Main rooms, decks, windows, etc. are best relocated to the south where sunlight is abundant.
• For the same reason, shades are required in the south with overhanging roof, etc. to avoid too much heat in summer.

• Use 2” x 6” framing, R-19 (R refers to R-value which is a measure of insulation. Higher R-value means better insulating properties) insulating batts, and a rigid insulation layer over the exterior wall framework for superinsulation.
• Ceilings need R-40 superinsulation while foundation walls need exterior rigid board insulation.

• A continuous impervious layer on the inside of exterior walls, which prevents heat exchange with no breaks, is required. Use caulk and gaskets for sealing purposes.

• An air-to-air heat exchanger can control home ventilation rates. The combination of a furnace and water heater will draw combustion air from the outside.

• There should be minimal windows in the north and west.
• Window areas should be about 8% of the floor area of the house.
• Window frames should be made of a non-conducting material that does not contain metal conductors like copper or aluminum.
• Double-paned windows should be treated with low emissivity (“Low E”) coatings.
