Purpose:

The practice of using heated bed covers during cold winter nights began in the early 1900s. It usually consisted of placing a number of hot water bottles between the sheets in the late evening so that the bed was sufficiently warm by bedtime. With advances in technology, this practice has been improved upon. Today, staying warm in bed is a simple matter of plugging in an appliance called an electric blanket.
